At Genus, sustainability is at the heart of our business.

Pioneering animal genetic improvement to sustainably nourish the world

As the global population continues to expand and our climate begins to change, the natural and human systems we rely on to produce our food are under increasing stress.

Our elite animal genetics and services enable farmers to produce more high quality, affordable animal protein using fewer units of water, energy, land, labour and antibiotic resource. Through genomic selection, we are continuously improving the quality of our genetics to drive further increases in the health and productivity of our animals. We therefore believe that the use of elite genetics and services can be a critical enabler as the world transitions to more environmentally friendly and sustainable animal protein production.

In addition to genomic selection, we are pioneering breakthrough technologies such as gene-editing and advanced reproductive techniques. These technologies have the potential to improve animal welfare and transform food security, thereby accelerating the benefits we can bring to farm animals and our customers around the world.

Our Approach & Strategy

Our products and services help farmers produce more high-quality animal protein per unit of resource. Our elite pigs, for instance, grow faster and convert feed to protein more efficiently than non-elite pigs. Daughters of our elite bulls produce greater volumes of more nutritious milk per unit of input (for example, feed or water) than non-elite cows. Driving continuous genetic improvement in our elite herds is therefore intrinsically linked with improved sustainability outcomes for bovine and porcine protein producers around the world.

We take a holistic approach to Sustainability at Genus. In addition to our focus on greenhouse gas emissions, we consider our wider environmental impacts, as well as ensuring our operations around the world are underpinned by policies and practices which reflect our core principles, such as animal well-being, supporting community causes and ensuring we foster a dynamic, inclusive and safe working environment.

Governance

Genus’s Board has overall responsibility and oversight for Genus’s Sustainability strategy. Genus’s Chief Executive has formal responsibility for implementing and monitoring the strategy. The Board is provided with regular reports (at least quarterly) on the performance of our sustainability strategy. All members of the Genus Executive Leadership Team, as well as the Chairman of the Board’s Audit & Risk Committee, have been appointed to the Group’s Sustainability Committee, which also comprises operational leaders and subject matter experts with accountability for delivering the Group’s sustainability objectives.

The Sustainability Committee oversees the Company’s performance against its emissions reduction targets and makes recommendations to the Board in relation to our business strategy and risk management processes. The Sustainability Committee meets three times a year and is chaired by Genus’s Chief Executive Officer.
