About us

Our innovation

A sustainable food system starts with innovative animal breeding.

Our R&D team supports our businesses by using cutting-edge science and technology to help farmers breed animals with desired traits (e.g. feed conversion efficiency, disease resistance and faster growth). This includes harnessing genome science, biosystems engineering, advanced reproductive techniques and responsible use of gene editing to explore potential ways of accelerating genetic improvement. In doing so, we are helping to develop a more sustainable food system by enabling customers to produce more safe, affordable and higher-quality animal protein, with the use of fewer natural resources than ever before.

Genus R&D: Innovation in Animal Breeding and Genetics

  • Sustainable food systems

Genus understands that sustainability efforts are critical to our food system and to ensuring a safe, reliable, and accessible food supply for people around the world. For hundreds of years, farmers have been using breeding knowledge, science and technology to improve our food system.

Much of the discussion about improving sustainability on farms focuses on the day-to-day practices involved in raising animals, such as water usage and waste. However, there is an additional important factor in improving sustainability in farm animals we should be discussing – breeding technologies.

At Genus, we have been building knowledge about animal breeding and genetics for decades and we’ve made significant strides over the last 60 years. As we continue to look to the future, new innovations such as harnessing our growing knowledge of genetics and data, can lead to things like:

    • Reduction of animal diseases and suffering
    • Less use of antibiotics
    • Less production of methane
    • More protein from fewer animals, resulting in less environmental impact (less food, water, waste)
    • Fewer animals born that won’t become food
    • Ensuring our animals are resilient to climate change while meeting the needs of local populations.
  • Innovative technologies

Genus R&D is dedicated to researching and developing innovative animal breeding technologies to continue to support a more sustainable food system for generations to come.

    These include:

    • Understanding the links between DNA and animal characteristics and how to positively influence them. We breed successive generations of animals by using DNA analysis to select animals with the most desirable traits in breeding herds; we have a database of more than 20 million animals DNA in our systems.
    • Creating the technology platform IntelliGen Technologies. This technology helps with screening and processing semen for desirable traits, including the female gender essential for dairy farmers in replacing their heifers.
    • Developing pigs through gene editing that are resistant to PRRSv (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus), a deadly disease that causes animal death and suffering as well as the loss of billions of dollars in farm production worldwide.
